80NEXT – lifetime extension

The 80NEXT programme lays the groundwork for safe, commercially viable long-term nuclear power operations.

Extending the operation of the existing reactors at Forsmark and Ringhals will ensure the continued supply of fossil-free nuclear power, which currently accounts for approximately one-quarter of Sweden’s total power generation. Operating all five reactors for 80 years, rather than the currently planned 60 years, will provide an additional 800 TWh of fossil-free electricity. This will support the electrification of industry, transport and society at large well into the 2060s.

Safe and commercially viable

An extensive feasibility study shows that all five reactors at Forsmark and Ringhals have the technical capacity for safe operations for up to 80 years. The majority of the nuclear power plants’ materials and components can continue to be used, giving lifetime extension a low climate footprint while offering commercial advantages.

  • Some systems and components need to be replaced, a process that will take place gradually over many years.
  • Most of the major investments required are expected to take place during the 2030s and 2040s.
  • Most of the work on site is expected to be carried out during scheduled outages, when the reactors are shut down for their annual inspections. This may result in some of these outages being extended.

Programme 80NEXT

Lifetime extension requires extensive preparations across a number of areas. To lead and coordinate this work, Vattenfall has launched a multi-year programme: 80NEXT. The programme builds on the results of the feasibility study, with the aim of developing a comprehensive implementation plan that can be rolled out immediately following future decisions.

Engaging work for decades to come

Extending the lifetime of the nuclear power plants means engaging work and career opportunities for many years to come. The implementation will also offer opportunities for professional development, for example in areas such as change management and component replacement.
